Questions We Answer Frequently -
Your question might be answered here!
I mailed in a registration form but haven't received anything back yet. Why?
We check the mail every day and post all registration request forms we
receive immediately. We generate a class ticket / receipt for your paid
registration at that time. It usually takes a couple of days for your registration
to reach us by mail and a few days for the class ticket to get back to you.
If you have not received your class ticket within a week, it's time to get
concerned. The only person on our staff who knows for sure whether we've
received your registration is our Registrar. Call him at 919-601-4941 or 919-894-3701
if you haven't received your ticket by 7 days after you sent it. It is sad
and it is out of our control, but some envelopes do get lost by the postal
service. We will be glad to work with you to get any problems like that
straightened out.
When are you open?
- Our Director (919-601-4941) is usually available on Mondays through Fridays from
9:00 am to 4:30 pm except for days that he is traveling or teaching.
- Our Director of Student Services (919-894-3701) is usually available on Mondays
through Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm except for days that she is traveling or teaching.
- The Registrar (919-601-4941 or 919-894-3701) is in his office all day on Mondays
through Thursdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Fridays from 9:00 am until 2:00
pm.
If I registered for a class, how will I know if it has been cancelled?
The Registrar will call you as soon as he knows that a class has been cancelled,
postponed, or moved. Except in very unusual circumstances, we usually know within
seven days before of the class date whether a class must be changed. He will call
the telephone numbers you provide on your registration to let you know. If you do
not provide a contact telephone number, he will send you a letter – hoping that
you get it in time to be helpful.
What if there is inclement weather in my area?
Our policy is that we try to hold the class if possible. However, there have been
occasions when North Carolina's Governor has advised citizens that travel is unwise.
In such a case, assembling for the class is too hazardous and the class will bepostponed.
We will call the telephone number you gave us to try and let you know as soon as a
decision is made.
If there is a question in your mind about weather-related cancellations, you may
call 919-601-4941. Any postponements or changes will be left on our voice mail announcement.
If we cancel or postpone the class, we will work with you to reschedule your registration.
If I send in the form and the class is full or cancelled, will I get my money back?
- If the class is full, our Registrar will call you at the number you provide. He
will try to find another similar class that will meet your needs. If we can't find
an appropriate class, we will return your tuition check uncashed.
- If we cancel or postpone the class, we will work with you to reschedule your registration.
If we can't find an appropriate date, we will refund all of your tuition.
Can I pay at the door?
Yes, sometimes. We always recommend that you register for a class well in advance.
We prepare personalized materials for all pre-registered students. Depending on the
class, you can get a $10 to $40 Early Bird discount for paying your tuition when you
register before the cut-off date. If you wait and pay any part of your tuition “at
the door,” you will not get that discount. To qualify for the Early Bird tuition
discount, you must postmark your registration and tuition payment (or call us to order
a class ticket with a credit/debit card by telephone) by ten days before the class
date.
Some classes are in such demand that they reach maximum capacity long before the
class date. “At the door” seats are not available for those classes unless
a pre-registered student fails to show up. Those cases are very rare. You may attempt
to register at the door for those classes.
If I can not attend a class I have registered for, can I get my money back?
Under some circumstances we will refund some of the tuition. If you have prepaid
your tuition in full and cancel at least 7 days before the class date, we will refund
all but a $30 administrative fee. Otherwise if you cancel by 10:30 am on the Wednesday
before the class date and pay an additional $30 administrative fee, we will apply
your tuition to a future class taken within 12 months of the original class date.
Unless there are unpreventable circumstances that arise after the Wednesday before
the class date deadline, students who do not attend classes will need to completely
re-register and pay tuition again for a later class. If you are late for class, leave
the class before it is completed, or do not show up at all, you will not get any credit
for the class and we will not refund any of your tuition. Due to State Board Regulations,
there is no grace period for being late.
How long will I be at the class?
The State Board requires a full 8- or 4-hour period of instruction. Lunch and breaks
are excluded. Class starts promptly as advertised. The State Board will not allow
us to admit students who arrive late. If you are late for class or leave the class
before it is completed, you will not get any credit for the class. Due to State Board
Regulations, there is no grace period for being late.
Will the teachers be selling products during the class?
Some of our instructors do allow you to buy products from them during class, but
the purpose of the class is to show you how to use the products. You will not be pressured
to buy products at our classes.
Why is the state board making us do this?
Until recently, the cosmetic arts industry was one of the few service industries
that did not require continuing education of its licensees. Many citizens of North
Carolina asked their legislators to be sure that their cosmetologists, manicurists,
and estheticians stay on top of their profession. Ultimately, the North Carolina Legislature
passed legislation that required the State Board to adopt specific continuing education
guidelines.
I do not see a class in my immediate area. How can I get you to have one here?
You may arrange for a special private class to be taught by our instructors in
your salon. To get information on scheduling a private class, call our Director of
Student Services at 919-894-3701.
Do you take credit or debit cards?
Yes. We accept VISA andMasterCard. You may send us your card information by mail,
telephone us with an order for a class ticket, or pay your tuition with a credit/debit
in person if you are at our Raleigh continuing education classroom or office. You
can also use your VISA andMasterCard to pay your tutition online.
I see that a class I want is almost full. What should I do to ensure myself a seat?
You can call our Registrar (919-601-4941 or 919-894-3701) and purchase a Class
Ticket by telephone by providing credit/debit card information. Otherwise, please
mail us a check or money order along with your registration and tuition..
Do hours carry forward to next year?
- If you are a licensed manicurist, the answer is no.
- If you are a licensed esthetician, the answer is no.
- If you are a licensed cosmetologist, you are required to accumulate
24 hours of continuing education before your license comes up for renewal
(on September 30, 2010). You may take all 24 hours at any time during your
3-year licensing period. So yes, your hours do carry forward through the
end of the 3-year period. They do not, however, carry forward to the next
licensing period.
Where will my class be held?
- In Raleigh, our classes are always held at our Continuing Education Classroom.
Directions to it can be found by clicking on the link beneath our address on our Web
site home page or by clicking on the “Contacting Troutman’s”
button. Or just click here.
- In other cities and towns across North Carolina, we hold classes in salons, conference
centers, and motels – anywhere classroom space is available. You can find directions
to our classrooms and other class information by clicking on the “Details” link
in any of our class schedule grids.
What happens if I don't get my hours by the time my license expires?
That is a question more properly directed to the State Board. You may find the
answer on their Web site: As we understand it, the Board will not issue a license
to anyone who has not completed their required continuing education hours before attempting
to renew. If you take the hours after September 30th, you can renew your license at
that time by paying the renewal late fee of $10.00 to the State Board. Please keep
in mind that anyone who is caught working without a current, active, renewed license
will be fined $250. If you have other questions and concerns about this, please direct
them to the State Board at 919-733-4117. Good luck.
